Corrugated box styles fall into two groups. Shipping styles are made to take knocks and stacking. Presentation styles are built to look good and be easy to open.

  • Shipping styles, like slotted containers, are made to survive rough handling in storage and to stack on a pallet.
  • Presentation styles, like mailer boxes and telescopic lid boxes, open without a struggle and look smart whether a customer is holding one or it’s sitting on a shelf.

Every style we make starts from a dieline drawn to your inside dimensions. We check it against the product’s weight before we pick the board and flute.

Do Slotted Box Styles Differ Much in Strength and Cost?

Slotted boxes are cut from a single sheet, scored and joined, and they ship flat. What sets the styles apart is the flaps. They determine the strength, the amount of board used and how fast the box packs.

  • RSC: The flaps on an RSC meet in the middle. It’s the most common style, and the most economical one.
  • Half slotted container: It has flaps on one side only and is meant to be used with a lid or tray. See our half slotted containers.
  • Full overlap slotted container: It has outer flaps that cover the whole width, so the top and bottom get double board. Our full overlap slotted boxes suit heavier loads.
  • Center special slotted container: It has inner and outer flaps of different lengths that meet in the middle. Take a look at our center special slotted boxes for extra strength at the closing.

Before recommending a style, we look at the packed weight and how high the boxes will be stacked, as that tells us whether an RSC is strong enough. We also ask how you close the box, whether by hand with tape or on a machine, because some styles won’t run on a case sealer.

How Do You Pick a Box Style for Your Product, Shipping Method and Shelf?

How Do You Pick a Box Style for Your Product, Shipping Method and Shelf?

Begin with where the box ends up. Parcel shipping means drops and stacking. Retail means easy opening and a clean front.

For heavy or bulky goods, our heavy-duty shipping containers use stronger board. Mailers suit e-commerce box styles well, since the customer doesn’t need tape or a knife to open one. Gable and tuck-end boxes are a good choice for retail-ready packaging, and a telescopic lid works nicely for gifts.

Packing a tuck-front mailer by hand is also faster than taping up a carton, which helps when you’re fulfilling a lot of orders. Got an odd-shaped product, or one with delicate parts? A custom die-cut box can hold it in place without any extra fill. Before suggesting a style, we ask how heavy the product is, how it ships and how the customer will open it.

What Can You Customize on Size, Material and Printing?

We make every box to your inside dimensions, meaning the length, width and height. Measure your product first, then leave a little room for any insert.

Our boxes come in kraft or white board, and in single wall or double wall. We pick the board grade and flute based on how heavy your product is.  A snug fit helps support package shipping charges down too, and dividers or inserts can stop several items knocking together.
